PIONEERS OF AFRO-COLOMBIAN MUSIC

En 1998, lanzamos al mercado nuestra primera producción: "Champeta Criolla, New African Music From Colombia" (Palenque Records-Night&Day).

PALENQUE RECORDS is a label specialized in Afro-Colombian music, founded in 1998 in Paris France, by Lucas Silva Dj Champeta-Man. Since then, we have released many records and we have changed the face of afro-colombian music, with a fusion of modern and traditional sounds. Our releases go from the very traditional genres of music, until the most modern and afro -electro beats, covering all ranges of black colombian music.

In 1996, Lucas Silva realeased the movie "THE CREOLES KINGS Of THE CHAMPETA" (30') in the town of Cartagena, in the Colombian Caribbean coast. This film was about the new tendencies of afro-Colombian music, with special focus on Champeta Criolla Style.Filming this documentary, hi could discover the richness of an afro-Colombian marginalized music, completely unknown from Colombia and the Andes and from the rest of the world.

Hi decided thus to create the Palenque Records label (called like this in homage to the village of San Basilio de Palenque), with the objective of making known the size of popular afro-Colombian music, which struggles in the poverty of everyday, and in the indifference of the media, too busy with other products "more commercial". Our first musical production was the Cd "CHAMPETA CRIOLLA, NEW AFRICAN MUSIC FROM COLOMBIA" (Palenque Records - Night & Day), published in October 98. It was the first time that this music was released abroad, and this compilation revealed to the world this unexpected musical movement.

In 1999 we published two new albums : "Champeta Criolla Vol 2 : Visionary Black Music from Underground Colombiafrica (Palenque Records - Night & Day), then "Sexteto Tabalá: Kings of Son Palenquero" (Buda records - Universal). Each album is the result of a long work of musical production and investigation, and is accompanied by a booklet written by myself, in which I give an account of all the investigations and the field work that I carried out, the whole presented in a modern, narrative and personal way.

The disc "Batata & his Rumba Palenquera - Radio Bakongo", was launched by the German label Network in April 2003. It was very well accepted by critics in Europe and in the United States. It was classified among the 50 best discs of World Music of all times by the English Review Song Lines, and one of the best discs of the year by the American review Latin Beat.

Unfortunately, in January 2004, Paulino Salgado died in Bogota, at 78 years old. "Radio Bakongo" is his only disc in solo, and it will remain for the generations to come like the musical testament from an exceptional artist.

In 2007, we released a new album, COLOMBIAFRICA THE MYSTIC ORCHESTRA, together with WORLD MUSIC NETWORK label(UK). Until today I thus realeased 11 discs of afro-Colombian music. Many magazines and other media of Europe, United States and Colombia, made heard about this musical work, with very positive critics.

The afro-Colombian culture is a cultural exception. Musicians and popular artists of my country are genius creators, but a few believe in them. For this reason it is advisable to impel a musical movement around their talent, to support and create an artistic movement of independent compositors who can build this future.

Our latets Releases are : PALENQUE PALENQUE (SOUNDWAY -PALENQUE RECORDS) , SEXTETO TABALA "CON UN SOLO PIE", FARAON BANTU VYNIL, together with CHUSMA RECORDS - GERMANY..and many more to come

Waite for more news over here , and lots of NEW RELEASES TO COME!!

PALENQUE RECORDS presente :

CHAMPETA VOL 2
New directions in afro-american music

señoras y señores - ladys and raggas
champetuas & champetuos :

Was’up mi gente!!!

Locombia is not what you think !!!

) For Real Motherfuckers

WHAT'S COMIN' ??? MORE COLOMBIAN VAUDOU SYSTEM !!!

Visionary Black Music from Colombia

Was' up my people!!!  Palenque Records comin' back attcha with some African ashé  ; happy and proud to bring you Afro-Colombian music from the Caribbean coast- Champeta Criolla.  This is the new musical universe created by blacks from my locombian  land: African guitar with voices from the hood, Latin Soukous, Afro-American Highlife, tropical mariguano Afro-beat, Soweto Cumbia…in other words, a wild mix of music- no passports please…
Dear melody-maniacs, Champeta is the most explosive rhythm out of the Caribbean's belly since the end of the century, and it's rewriting the "New Testament of Afro-American music".

40 years ago, crazy sailors coming from Africa arrived in Cartagena, bringing with them albums bought during their shameless nights of folly.  This was stuff like the celestial music of Prince Nico Mbarga (Cameroon-Nigeria), the Oriental Brothers (Nigeria), Tabu Ldy Rochereau & Mbilia Bell du Congo, and a long list of the "Highlife Master Messagers", who made music both feet firmly rooted in the Earth, near the spirits of the ancestors.  Thanks to these anonymous travelers, and to the vitality of my Afro-Colombian brothers who have made African music the rhythm of their hearts, in less than 10 years Colombia has become the "Soukous Republic of America".  Today, these African stars provide major inspiration for thousands of youth who dream of forming their own groups to play Soukous and Highlife in the streets of my great country.

Sound systems are the musical conservatories of marginal suburbia.  They are the University of African History for hundreds of young champetuos…the true "Papa Sabor" of all the boyz-in-tha-hood, the future U-Roys, Big Youths or Beenie Man of Colombia inspired by these giant machines of bestial sound to change the direction of our street music…Yeah…white man, as I told you!! Locombia is not what you think!!!

Who were those pioneers of Champeta, the first searchers to have found a dose of this most perfect mix??  It all started in the 70's, during the Golden Age of the Colombian Hippy mouvement, with the creation of the group "Wganda Kenya", directed by the Salsa-King, Fruko.  This group wrote several pages in the anthology of our modern Evangile with their incredibly feverish Afrobeat (listen to Champeta Criolla Vol. 1).  Their records were a burning deluge of Haitian, African and Latin music united at 1 000 000˚C.

A few years later Joe Arroyo arrived with his "La Verdad" orchestra.  It took over and continued the exploration with a fusion of Salsa, Soukous & Haitian Compas.  Today, even if only a few admit it, Joe is the King of Champeta Criolla par excellence, because all of his inspiration comes from African music.  He grew up in the streets singing the African melodies "El Gran Conde" played.  He is son of the Sound System…

However, the irrefutable fathers of this music are the black maroons  from the San Basilio village of Palenque, near Carthagena.  Viviano Torres with his group Anne Swing, Justo Valdes & Son Palenque, the group Kussima with Hernan Hernandez…Without them, this musical movement would not exist today.

Colombia does not have the monopoly on Champeta.  Simultaneously in other countries, other creators, inspired by the same fire, have leapt into the ring: Juan Luis Guerra from the Dominican Republic, genius of Merengue-Soukous, Ricardo Lemvo (Congo-Kinshasa) with his African Salsa, "Batata y su Rumba Palenquera (Colombia), a new group offering a Cumbia-Afrobeat fusion.  Without knowing each other, all of these artists have been working in the same direction to transform African and American music into some serious Zouk!!  (A none-stop party.)  They are all major constellations in our musical universe.  They are all Champeta Kings, even without knowing it.

Champeta Vol. 2 (y mas na'!!!)- For real motherfuckers

In 1998, was born the label Palenque Records with its first album, "Champeta Criolla- New African Music From Colombia- Vol. 1".  It was the first Champeta record published outside the frontiers of our Caribbean.  This production had great success in France, USA, Germany, Spain…Today, after 2 years of intense musical and cinematic work, we are coming back with this production, "Champeta Criolla Vol. 2- Visionary Black Music From Colombia"- a new stone in the pyramidal construction of our underground Afro-Colombian sound.

For this adventure, Palenque Records has called in two world champions of box known by all: MC IBA, an African music guru in France, and Lucas Silva, Colombian traveler, film-maker and musical director, better known in the ghetto streets as "Super Champeta-Man".  To sum it all up, two warriors of black music, scientists of the "vacile efectivo" ("maximum enjoyment" in champetuo  slang),that never compromise when it comes to the fight.

This compilation unites 17 titles, produced and recorded by the architects of the Champetuo sound of Carthagena:  the famous Chawala, selector for the Rey De Rocha Sound System, Yamiro Marin, musical producer, the celebrated Dr. Jekill & Mr, Hyde, king of Nigerian music in Colombia, Luis Garcia and Alvaro Cuellar, mixers, and all the singers and other musicians incessantly working to construct this musical tower of Babel.

Listen to the sounds of a new country, being built even as I write these lines.  An African- Colombia rising beautifully on the ruins of our colonial past.

What's Comin': More Colombian Voodoo System

Palenque Records will always be around, with an ear locked onto all the Caribbean Sound Systems in order to bring you the most inspired music from the streets, all the streets of the Latino ghetto.  In these Colombian streets, abandoned to God and the Devil, musicians the size of John Lee Hooker, Compay Segundo, King Sunny Ade, and Miles Davis walk the streets in total anonymity… living with nothing, in misery!!!!

Our task is long and hard.  We are constructing, on the ruins of colonialism, the edifice of our Latino-Black-World music.  We are constantly voyaging through new and risky territories; in a magnificent and crazy Safari across "savage" planets.  Our Land-Rover jeep is encrusted with mud and surrounded by ferocious beasts: loud-speakers making the entire forest tremble, beautiful creatures straight out of our dreams…  They are all the inhabitants of the new musical world we are trying to invent, trying to support through our modest discography efforts.

In our travels, we rediscover America everyday.  Because we are Latino-Afro-Americans, we will always have something new to discover…And from each new experience, we bring back new inspiration for our writing of - as long as Oloddumare allows it- the New Testament of Afro-American Music.

At one hour far from Carthagene, on the Colombian Caribbean coast, one can find the village of the first free Blacks of America :  Palenque de San Basilio.
In this village was born in the Twenties the first group of Montuno Sound ever existing in Colombia. A group of peasants adopted the Cuban Sound and mixed it with the cumbia, the bullerengue and the chalupa : the "palenquero sound "was born. They created this new musical style whereas they were working with their axes and machetes in the cane plantations.
In Palenque, in this free African nation, are now living the musicians of Sexteto Tabalá, descendants from humble peasants who decided one day to add a little Colombian savour to the Cuban Sound.
"The true Sound has been disappearing everywhere in the world.  We are the only ones who play this music the way they played it before, with old traditional instruments ", says the "maestro" Cassiani, leader of Sexteto Tabalá.
"We play with drums, bongos, maracas, guiro, clave and Marimbula (African instrument equivalent to the double bass).  We do not need any guitar nor trumpet.  Percussions and voices are enough for this sextet, kind of mini symphony orchestra of "monteadrentro sound".
The musicians of Sexteto Tabalá are popular stars, Sound true legends...
Señoras y señores, come to dance with Sexteto Tabalá, the kings of afro-Colombian Sound!!

PRESENT :

SEXTETO TABALA : PALENQUE DE SAN BASILIO

Ref C 560 187 ( Ocora / Harmonia Mundi )

PALENQUE RECORDS is proud to present you a new vibration from the Caribbean coast of Colombia

"Palenque de San Basilio" is a compilation of traditional songs and musics of a little Colombian area ignored until now, Palenque de San Basilio, village of the first free Blacks of the New-World. There, in this cradle of African culture, appeared the lumbalù, chalupa and bullerengue funerary songs, sung in kikongo and kimbundu dialects
You will meet "Las Alegres Ambulancias" and their ancestral autochtone music, like the bullerengue, afro rhythm derived from the cumbia.  Their music is the result of a combination of African popular musics from the Sixties: zaïrian soukous, South-African mbaqanga, cameroun makossa, and Nigerian and ghanean high life.
Also in this compilation;  "Oriki Tabalà" (also known as the "Sexteto Monasito di Benkos" when he sings sexteto music), who represents a new time of the palenquera music:  he puts into traditional music the sounds of champeta and modern African music.
Another star of this music in the disc, "Sexteto Tabala", mixture of Cuban Sound and palenqueros rhythms. Most of their songs are ploughing songs (track 17), and others, like Cortaron a Helena (track 7), new title, are sounds which were generally sung during funerals
Concerning Ciquito's compositions, farmer, guerissor and especially authentic troubadour, are a mixture inspired by vallenato, bullerengue, cumbia and sexteto.  Finally, Cha Ines and Cha Pabla will bring you back into the past with their homage to the biggest singers from old times.
Let you seduce by this original compilation, which will make you discover the biggest singers of these unique rhythms, living testimonys of a "New" Africa in Latin America, mixes of traditions and new emergent kinds

PRESENTS :

BATATA Y SU RUMBA PALENQUERA

Ref 24.127 ( Network - Harmonia Mundi)

Batata, the big voodoo Maestro of afro-Colombian percussion comes with his first album with his Rumba Palenquera "Radio Bakonga".
It is the first production of this legendary musician now missing, coming from the village of Palenque, located in the mountains not far from the Colombian Caribbean coast, place where the first free Africans settled,.
His musician career began in childhood, when he played during African ceremonies. Then he played during many years as drum head and writer in the group of the Colombian diva Toto Momposina. This is the time when the first African discs of high-life from Ghana, the soukous of Zaire and the afro-beat of Fela Kuti appeared on the Caribbean coast. Little by little, this music mixed with the authentic roots to create a new musical style :  the champeta criolla.  For much, Batata is the king of champeta.
For this Network production, Champeta-Man joins together the musicians of Batata with some stars of Congolese music:  Rigo Star and Dally Kimoko in the sebenes of fire, (who wrote biblical pages of Soukous with M'Billia Bell, Tabu Ley, Soukous Star, Papa Wemba and Koffi Olomide among others), and 3615 Code Niawu, the star of the organizers, doing the vocal animations.
This album is a Road Movie, from Palenque to Kinshasa, Cartagena, Habana, Yaounde, Paris and San Pablo;  a journey through the memory of Batata, a come-back  to the sources, through the veins of Africa and all the ancestors of Palenque. Ladies & raggas:  enjoy with the sounds of this ancestral music ;  This is roots music, Champeta roots!!!  from ColombiAfrica to the world.

SYNOPSIS :
This documentary tells the story of the CHAMPETA or CREOLE TERAPIA, one of the most innovative, ignored and marginalized musical kinds of Colombia and perhaps of Latin America. This musical movement, which mixes African rhythms like Soukouss from Congo (ex-Zaire), Mbaqanga from South Africa and Highlife from Ghana-Nigeria, with rhythms of the French and English Speaking West Indies (Haïtian "Compass ", Socca, Calypso, and Reggae), runs as a Master on dancers 'feet all along the Colombian Atlantic Coast, from Turbo to Riohacha.  Born in the black districts from Carthagena at the end of the Seventies, and in villages like Palenque de San Basilio, this Afro-Colombian rhythm, made popular by some fish salesmen, shoeshiners and self-educated musicians of popular origin, is going to extent and to conquer all the country thanks to its West-Indian and Colombian rhythms.  The documentary is a portrait of CHAMPETA's most famous artists and discjockeys, as well as the story of the birth of this music, which looks like the one of Reggae and Rap in Jamaica and in the United States.  One of its goals is to make known the talent of these artists, humble people who built alone and without any help all the necessary structure for the production and the distribution of this music:  independent labels, recording studios, disc stores... and a public which shows its support at every new production. African rhythms of the whole world, mixed with the rhythms of our Colombian Caraibes, meet in Carthagena to mix with the new vacile efectivo of Creole Terapia.

MENTION OF HONOR - BARTOK PRICE in the Festival "Bilan du Film Ethnographique" - Paris, 2001

SYNOPSIS :
This film is dedicated to the African culture in Colombia, sight and told through the prism of its music. Traditional rhythms bring us back to the past, to the ancestors and the bonds with Africa; and the modern music played by young people brings us back to the present, in a "pluri-ethnical and multicultural" country full of contradictions.  On all the Colombian Caribbean coast, African drums resound since the time of the colony.  Initially there were Cumbia and Bullerengue, African rhythms brought back by the slaves in the colony time.  Then there was the Sound, music from Cuba which arrived to Colombia in the 1920s. It settled in the deepest afro-Colombian tradition:  the one of the black maroons' descendants who fled slavery.  In Palenque de San Basilio, maroon village founded in the XVI° century, the SEXTETO TABALA (which means "drums of war" in afro-Colombian Creole) has been playing "Palenquero Sound" for more than 50 years.  But the story of Palenque does not stop there:  from the trunk of the tradition are pushing at fast pace the branches of modernity.  Today, the black maroons from Palenque invade the close big cities (Carthagena, Barranquilla) looking for a better future.  It is in Carthagène, colonial city which was one of the larger slavery ports, where the new music from the Colombian blacks was born:  the Champeta, hot mix of Zaïrian Soukous, afro-Colombian rhythms and caribbean influences (Socca, Calypso, reggae...).  Exclusive music of the city' s poor and disinherited people, Champeta swept everything on its passage.  Salsa and Cuban Sound were totally forgotten;  the African music was the detonator of an extraordinary musical movement, awaking the fire of a hidden ancestral memory.  Far from the large music major companies of the capital, some black peasants who just arrived in town provided the foundations of the musical movement of Champeta.  Looking for cheap stars, they took from the reserve of local desillusioned youth to record successes of creole Soukous:  caïds from the streets or street hawkers, they all sing the everyday life of their barrio in popular rhythms of Zaire or Nigeria.  The kings of Champeta have no palace, their kingdom's courts are the beaches and the streets of Carthagena.  They are the kings of another marginal Colombia, left apart, that even Colombian people ignore:  the African Colombia.
